Life skills are
learned by living them

Activity Advocates takes IDD young adults into their community — with trained staff at their side — to build the real-world skills that lead to greater independence.

We don't simulate life in a classroom. We go out into San Diego — and practice it. Every outing is a structured, staff-led experience designed to build confidence, independence, and real capability.

Core life skills, practiced in the real world

Every outing targets the foundational skills IDD young adults need to navigate life with greater independence. Not once — but repeatedly, across different settings and situations.

💰

Financial literacy

Counting change, making purchases, handling cash, and understanding the value of money in everyday transactions.

💬

Communication

Placing orders, asking for help, making requests of strangers, and building confidence in real social exchanges.

🧭

Community access

Moving through public spaces — following directions, staying with a group, and engaging with the world around them.

Decision making

Choosing what to order, what to buy, and how to spend time — building the habit of self-directed thinking.

Out in the community. Not in a classroom.

Activity Advocates was built around a single belief: the best place to learn how to navigate the world is in the world itself.

Our trained staff take small groups of IDD participants on community outings throughout San Diego. At every step, they coach participants through the moments that matter — making a purchase, ordering a meal, navigating a new space, asking for directions.

We don't do the work for them. We stand beside them while they do it. That's the difference.

01

Refer or enroll

Families, regional centers, and support networks can refer IDD young adults. We learn about each participant's goals and comfort level before they join a group.

02

Join a group outing

Small groups head out into the San Diego community with our trained staff. Each outing has a focus, and every participant gets hands-on coaching throughout.

03

Build real independence

Repeated practice in real settings adds up. Over time, participants grow more confident, need less support, and are better equipped to engage with the world on their own terms.

A gap in opportunity — not ability

IDD young adults are often kept from the everyday community experiences others move through without a second thought. Not because they can't participate — but because they rarely get the structured opportunity to practice.

"Independence isn't something you teach in a room. It's something you build one real experience at a time."
